How to Add Tags to Files in Windows 11

Hi, Tracy here from Valadilene. Today we will talk about creating and adding tags to your files in Windows 11, which can help you organize and locate files more efficiently. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Locate the File

Rule number one: You need to know where the file is. Using the file explorer, navigate to the file you wish to tag. Once you’ve located it, right-click on the file and choose ‘Properties’ from the context menu.

Step 2: Open Properties

Once you’ve clicked ‘Properties’, a new window will pop-up containing different tabs like ‘General’, ‘Security’, ‘Details’, and ‘Previous Versions’. It’s within the ‘Details’ tab that we’re interested.

Step 3: Edit Tags

Click on the ‘Details’ tab. Below the heading ‘Description’, you will see ‘Tags’. Click on the value field next to ‘Tags’, and you will now be able to add or edit tags to the file. Make sure to separate each tag with a semicolon (;).

Step 4: Save Changes

After adding or editing the tags, click ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’ to save the changes.

Considerations

Keep in mind that not all file types support tagging. While commonly used file formats like Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and jpeg images support tags, others may not.

Conclusion

That’s it! You’ve now learned how to add tags to files in Windows 11. Tagging can indeed be a useful tool in organizing your digital workspace, and I hope this guide has made the process more approachable.
