How to Unfreeze Your Credit: A Simple Guide

Hi, I’m Tracy. As part of my mission with Valadilene.org to make tech less intimidating, today I’ll be breaking down how to unfreeze your credit, step-by-step.

Why Would I Need to Unfreeze My Credit?

A credit freeze is a handy tool for preventing identity theft, as it stops credit agencies from releasing your credit reports without your consent. It essentially locks down your credit to ensure no one else can apply for credit using your identity. However, if you need to apply for a new line of credit, rent an apartment, or start a job that requires a credit check, you’ll need to unfreeze it.

How to Unfreeze My Credit?

Unfreezing your credit is fairly simple, but it will require contacting the three main credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Equifax

For Equifax, you can visit their website or call them at 1-800-349-9960. You’ll need to provide your personal information and the PIN you were given when you initially set up the freeze.

Experian

To unfreeze your Experian credit report, visit their website or call 1‑888‑397‑3742. Again, you will need to provide personal information and your PIN.

TransUnion

To unfreeze your TransUnion report, visit their website or give them a call at 1-888-909-8872. You’ll be asked to provide your personal information and your PIN.

How Long Does it Take to Unfreeze Credit?

The time it takes for the freeze to be lifted varies, but it is usually done within an hour if requested online or by phone.

Remember, unfreezing your credit is an important step in allowing potential creditors to access your credit report. It’s a simple process that’s critical if you plan to apply for any kind of credit.
