Slicehost logoIf you are in need of a VPS, check out Slicehost. Their service is just awesome and they offer all the features that any developer could ask for.
I tried it yesterday after a quick look at some reviews, which were very positive. Their list of features caught my eye as well as their pricing which seems to me very affordable given the kind of service they offer.
So I decided to get a 256 slice and after a one-minute registration (including payment through my credit card) it was up and running with a vanilla Ubuntu 8.04 install (by the way, you can choose your favourite Linux distro).

The admin control panel interface is pretty nice, very well designed and it allows you to do pretty much anything you’ll need, like rebooting, upgrading, rebuilding and showing diagnostics of your slice, managing DNS, and accessing help sections. You can even access your slice through an AJAX console (in alternative to an SSH connection) from your web browser.

Slicehost’s prices vary from the monthly $20 for the 256 flavour, to 800 bucks for the 15.5 GB slice. All the machines are Quad core 64-bit (8+ ghz) with RAID-10 disk storage. Here’s the full list of features:

  • Full root access and rebooting
  • Choice of Linux distro
  • Dedicated IP address and Tier-1 redundant bandwidth
  • RAID-10 disk storage
  • Reserved RAM
  • Guaranteed CPU share and more when available
  • 4-core servers running Xen virtualization instances
  • Slicehost management portal for reboots and software installs
  • Mobile management portal for smartphones
  • Ajax console access
  • Bootable rescue mode
  • Private IPs for inter-slice communication
  • HA capabilities via shared IPs
  • Machines running with fixed usage limits, below full capacity

They have a large community section which includes a message board, a wiki and an articles sections. If you’re not a Linux guru you will find a lot of help in there, including articles for beginners on how to setup a complete web server environment on your slice from scratch. Basic Linux knowledge is highly recommended anyway, otherwise you’ll soon find yourself lost or hose your slice several times before getting a working environment.
